Committee members

Dr Silke Fricke is a Speech and Language Therapist and Senior Lecturer in Human Communication Sciences. She is the Faculty Lead for ECRs and Chair of the Faculty ECR committee (FoHECRC). She is also the ECR Lead for the School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing & Midwifery (AHPNM) and a mentor for for ECRs.  She represents FoHECRC at the Faculty Research and Innovation Committee (FRIC) and the University ECR committee (UECRC). Silke is also the Deputy Lead for PGRs in AHPNM and Course Director of two non-clinical PGT programmes. She is researching speech, language, and literacy development and difficulties in monolingual and multilingual children. Her research also focuses on the evaluation of early support and intervention approaches.

Dr Liam Knox  is the Faculty Deputy ECR Lead for the Faculty

Dr Lucy Lee is the University’s Head of Researcher Development, leading the team who deliver the Think Ahead development programme for researchers. She is also the Researcher Development Manager for FoH and is a member of the University’s ECR Committee (UECRC) and the Postgraduate Research Committee (UPGRC). Lucy is a Senior Fellow with the Higher Education Academy and currently studying for an MSc in Senior Management and Strategic Leadership.



Prof Barry Gibson, is a Medical Sociologist who is working in the School of Clinical Dentistry. He is a trained mentor and has been recognised for his support to ECRs over many years at the University of Sheffield.  He is also an ECR mentor for the British Sociological Association. He is the ECR Lead for the School of Clinical Dentistry

Dr Luke Green  is a Humane Research Trust Research Fellow at the School of Clinical Dentistry interested in the cross-talk between pathogens and the host during infection. He has a specific interest in how the composition of host membrane proteins alter during infection with the pathogenic Neisseria species and how we can target this to produce potential novel therapeutics. Luke is Deputy ECR Lead for the School of Clinical Dentistry and the Deputy Fellows’ College representative. 

Dr Phil Elks is a Sir Henry Dale Fellow interested in understanding and improving our immune response to infections. He has a focus on the immune response to the bacterial infection tuberculosis, a global threat with the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Phil is based in Firth Court and is an ECR Lead for the Division of Clinical Medicine in the School of Medicine and Population Health

Dr Scott Allen is a lecturer and an ECR Lead in the Division of Neuroscience. His research team focuses on the role of metabolic dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders, with a particular focus on motor neurone disease. He is the KE champion for the Division, UoA4 REF Impact Lead and directs the Readable Research lay summary initiative (www.readableresearch.com). 

Dr Alison Twelvetrees is a Sir Henry Dale Fellow in the School of Medicine and Population Health, Division of Neuroscience. She studies the molecular mechanisms of slow axonal transport in neurons using single molecule imaging techniques.  Alison is an ECR Lead for Neuroscience.



Laura Heathcote is a Research Associate in Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDS). She is a health economic modeller with a research focus on cancer screening and early detection, and is the ECR lead for HEDS within the the Division of Population Health

Ellie Holding  is a Research Fellow for Public Health in the Sheffield Centre of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) specialising in qualitative research methods and evaluations of complex interventions which seek to reduce health inequalities. She has a particular interest in research on housing, poverty, welfare reform and child health with a particular focus on marginalised groups. She is ECR Lead for ScHARR representing the Public Health section. 

Dr Jen Lewis is a Research Fellow in Medical Statistics. She is interested in utilising routinely collected data to improve urgent and emergency care service provision within the NHS, and methodological issues around the design of cluster-randomised trials. Jen is an ECR Lead for the Design, Trials and Statistics section of the Division of Population Health and is a member of the Career Development committee of the National Institute for Health & Care Research Statistics Group. 

Jennifer Read is a University Lecturer. She is an Occupational Therapist by background and specialises in qualitative research. She is the Programme Director for the cross Faculty Masters in Health and clinical research delivery programme. Her research interests include projects that improve healthcare processes, experiences and outcomes for service users and staff, including rapid real world evaluation of complex interventions. Jennifer is an ECR Lead for the Health Services Research section of  the Division of Population Health 

Helen Bryant is Professor in Cancer Biology and Therapeutics and an ECR lead for the School of Medicine and Population Health focusing on those ECRs based in the main medical school building (D, E, F and G-floor). 

Dr Ruth Thompson is a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Researcis a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow in the Division of Clinical Medicine (School of Medicine and Population Health) working on the DNA damage response in cancer cells and how this impacts response to radiotherapy. Ruth is the ECR Rep for Research Fellowship Holders.

Dr Isabel Windeatt-Harrison is the joint Chair of the FoHRSA committee (together with Monika Myszczynska).

Lydia Castelli is a Senior Experimental Officer in the Department of Neuroscience and deputy chair of the FoHRSA. She manages the Omics Facility within SITraN, providing support and training in the field of RNA Biology. She is a Senior Fellow of the HEA.

Dr Gemma Arblaster is an Orthoptist and a Lecturer in Orthoptics. She is the deputy ECR Lead for the School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing & Midwifery (AHPNM). Gemma is the co-lead for the ‘Health and Wellbeing in Adulthood and Later Life’ research theme in AHPNM. She researches strabismus (eye misalignment), binocular vision and eye movements. 

Dr Alanna (Leni) Green is a Wellcome Trust Career Development Award Fellow investigating molecular mechanisms of cancer dormancy in the bone microenvironment. Leni is representing One University, linking to her role as Faculty of Health One University Lead for Collaborative and Supportive Culture. She is in the School of Medicine and Population Health, and based in the Medical School (predominantly F-floor). 

Emily Handford is an HR Advisor supporting the Faculty and is the HR representative on this Committee.
